Vintage Chanel No.5 Ads

Vintage 1960 Chanel No. 5 ad

Here are some vintage Chanel ads from the 1960s. I always find it interesting to flip through old magazines. I found these online.

I find the ad copy somewhat strange: Every woman alive wants Chanel No. 5.

Reduce Workout Stress With Bath Salts

Warmer weather means it’s time to get serious with your workout routines. Soon, you will be leaving the jackets and sweaters behind and exposing your arms and legs.

Inevitably, with ramped-up workouts, you are likely to feel a few aches and pains.

Here is a warm, soothing way to ease your tired muscles. Make your own scented bath salts. It’s easy, inexpensive, and fun. They also make great gifts.

In a glass bowl mix together:

1 cup of dead sea salts or Epsom salts
1 teaspoon of glycerin or olive oil
10 drops of lavender essential oil or fragrance oil of your choice.

Add the fragrance one drop at a time until you get the desired strength of fragrance. Store in a glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Mix or shake before use. To use, add 1/4 cup of the mixture to the running water as you draw a bath. The warm salt water will soften your muscle aches and pull toxins from your skin. The lavender oil will help you relax and smell wonderful. I like to take a salt bath before I go to bed. I wake up refreshed and ache free.

You can purchase several kinds of bath salts at Wholesale Supplies Plus. They have European Spa Salts, Dead Sea Salts and more. Or you can buy classic Epsom salts at a drug store.

To give as a gift, you can add a few drops of food coloring to the glycerin and mix throughout the salts. Tie a pretty ribbon around the glass jar.

Ancient Perfume

A team from Bonn University’s Egyptian Museum are studying the residue of a perfume belonging to an ancient Egyptian Queen.

The team is trying to recreate the scent worn by the Pharaoh Hatshepsut, who ruled Egypt in the 15th century B.C., by using the dried-out remnants of a scented oil found in a metal jar in her tomb.

I wonder what it will smell like?

Quick Stress Fix

beautiful young woman lying on isolated white background

When I get home from work, the muscles around my neck are shoulders are usually tight after sitting at a desk all day. This only gets compounded by driving in traffic.

Here is a quick and pleasant way to relieve tension. You’ll need a bowl of warm water, a wash cloth and your favorite calming essential oil. Lavender and camomile are best.

Fill a medium-sized bowl with warm water. Add a few drops of essential oil and swish around with your hands. Put in a wash cloth and soak for a minute. Then ring out and apply to face and neck. Breathe deeply. The warmth and soothing scent will help relax your muscles. The cloth will cool off quickly, so reapply a few times.

These little moments alone can really help. Try adding some relaxing music.

In NYC – Day 3 part 1

fifthShopping. Shopping. Shopping.

A long time ago I lived in Manhattan and worked in an office on Fifth Avenue near St. Patrick’s Cathedral. My apartment was on the Upper East Side, so I would walk to work past all the high-end shops like Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Tiffany, Versace, H. Stern, Cartier, Pucci, Saks, etc.

I could never afford anything in these stores. But now that I am a little older and actually have a career, I wanted to shop Fifth Avenue — the sales, of course.

My first stop was Saks Fifth Avenue. I’d forgotten how the cosmetics sales reps practically tackle you when you walk onto the first floor. I raced by them and took the escalator up one flight. The designer sales racks were bulging with goodies. But, alas, even at 80% off I still couldn’t afford most of the merchandise. But it was nice to be able to handle and see up close the workmanship that goes into these pieces.

There was Valentino, Versace, Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, all the big names you see in the pages of Vogue. Ladies in fur coats were digging through the racks. I was surprised by the wide range of sizes that were on offer. Usually, when you see a designer sale, the clothes are all microscopic. I didn’t buy anything, although I fretted over a beautiful winter white driving coat. I made my way back to the first floor and bought a silver-sequined scarf. I’ll take a picture of it when I get home.

flemingOn my way out I got enticed to one of the perfume counters where I tried on Coty’s La Voce by Renee Fleming. The beautiful bottle was inspired by one of the chandeliers at the Metropolitan Opera house. The top of the bottle can be removed and worn as a brooch. The whole package comes on its own little stage. The scent is a lovely oriental floral. It costs $200 and proceeds go to the Metropolitan Opera.

Next, I wandered into Ferragamo, one of my favorite stores. They were having an end-of-season sale. I bought two pairs of driving shoes. One in lipstsick red patent leather, the other in black suede. I’ll show you when I get back to L.A.

I wandered in and out of other shops just to browse. Takashimaya (where they offered me some hand cream because of the cold weather), Bergdorf’s, Bendel’s. They were all packed because of the sales.

I was disappointed to see that some bargain stores have moved in. Surely, there is a better place for H&M, Zara and Juicy. I have nothing against those stores, but they are out of place on Fifth Avenue.

It looks like I’m going to an Off-Off Braodway show tonight. More later.

The long awaited Chanel N°5 EAU PREMIÈRE has finally arrived.

Younger and softer, N°5 EAU PREMIÈRE is a new interpretation of the classic Chanel N°5 fragrance.

The First Notes of N°5 EAU PREMIÈRE give a touch of freshness to this indefinable bouquet, which seems to open up gradually, as if revived by the morning dew.

At the heart of the fragrance, the flowers in this abstract bouquet open up completely. In N°5 EAU PREMIÈRE, the notes of Rose and Jasmine seem purer, with a delicate transparency.

Finally, N°5 EAU PREMIÈRE delightfully reveals the lingering trail that gives N°5 all its personality. Distinctive and absolutely unique, it brings new and softer tones to this interpretation.

There is a lovely little graphical presentation at this link complete with impressionistic music by Debussy.

I’m wearing it right now. Mmm, I wish I could let you smell it through this blog.
